The Source Group developed and implemented an above ground treatment program for excavated soil impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons at four sites in the Los Angeles area. The selected remedial technology was enhanced above ground bioremediation.

The former retail service station sites were vacant and well suited for above ground bioremediation and the cumulative volume of soil requiring treatment exceeded 21,000 cubic yards. The remedial technology required up front and detailed analysis of the assessment data, followed by controlled pilot bench studies.

Each project required excavation below the water table, which necessitated the use of various types of shoring, dewatering and treatment, and unique backfill and compaction techniques.

Results: The project was performed on budget and within schedule. Soil treatment was completed rapidly, enabling the client to sell the properties for development. The selected treatment technology and successful project execution saved the client more than $800,000 over other accelerated cleanup options evaluated.
