Remedial Evaluation and Modeling

Operating Refinery
Tulsa, Oklahoma

The Source Group, Inc. was retained by a large petroleum refining and marketing company to provide data modeling, groundwater contaminant modeling, and remedial program analyses. Additional support was provided regarding evaluation of risk to surface waters and development of regulatory strategies for dealing with the surface water risk issues.

Data modeling work involves the review and assimilation of site geologic and chemical data into advanced three-dimensional data modeling software to provide an effective demonstration tool, support groundwater contaminant modeling, free-phase product modeling, and to support evaluations of multiple overlapping groundwater remedial programs.

Groundwater flow and transport modeling is used to further aid in evaluation of existing remedial programs and to enhance or design new and improved systems. The results of data, groundwater and systems modeling is reviewed and balanced with other site issues to develop an integrated refinery-wide remedial program that meets all regulatory requirements, reduces operational costs, and ultimately reduces the long-term environmental liability associated with the Site.

Results: The Source Group initially provided rapid response data evaluation and reporting services enabling our client to meet critical regulatory deadlines and avoid threatened fines.

Based on data evaluations and LNAPL recovery modeling work, The Source Group staff developed a strategy to boost LNAPL recovery rates by up to ten times using advanced pumping recovery management techniques allowing the potential for significant cost recovery to support future environmental expenditures.

Currently, The Source Group is working to develop an integrated groundwater re-injection and LNAPL recovery program that will allow for further cost reductions related to water treatment and discharge.
