Project Description I

Brownfield Redevelopment Project
Former Municipal Landfill - Palm Springs, CA

The Source Group is currently supporting the redevelopment of the former Palm Springs Municipal Landfill.  The Landfill was used from the early 1930s to the 1960s when it ceased operating.  In the years that followed, it evolved into an unmanaged wasteland.

By employing a cooperative relationship with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), The Source Group, Inc. and the Redevelopment Team worked together to explore options for remediation and redevelopment of the approximately 40-Acre Brownfield Site. The Source Group completed the remedial investigation/ feasibility study, prepared the final removal action workplan and received final approval from the DTSC to implement the remedial portion of the redevelopment.

The closure program consisted of removal and replacement (disposal within the original footprint of the existing landfill material) of material primarily impacted with dioxins, PAHs and lead. The remediation process involved removal of over one million cubic yards of soil and landfill debris. The landfill material was consolidated into a smaller area in the center of the property and capped.

The Source Group is also responsible for the design of the landfill gas collection and monitoring systems, and will be performing the operation and maintenance of the system(s).   Land around the perimeter of the consolidated material has been redeveloped with commercial buildings, including a state of the art shopping center, and a parking lot will then be constructed on top of the capped landfill.  Gas collection, abatement, and monitoring systems will be installed within the landfill and underneath planned buildings and structure.

The plan being implemented will mitigate the existing risks associated with the unmanaged landfill property, enabling the land to be converted to productive commercial property.  The project was funded without public money.
